About Jenna Lucente

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Jenna Lucente spent her childhood growing up in Staten Island, NY. During high school an interest in art led her to Syracuse University, where she studied painting with teachers such as Gary Trento and Jerome Witkin. After leaving undergraduate, Jenna quickly scurried into an MFA program at CUNY Queens College where she worked with Gabriel Laderman, Jenny Snider, Harry Kramer and Cynthia Carlson to name a few.

After graduate school, Jenna was able to support herself by working in the publishing industry for various companies such as Ziff Davis and Time Inc. When not at work, Jenna was able to continue making and showing art throughout the New York City area. In recent years, Jenna has been teaching part time and pursuing her painting career with more intensity.

Jenna's life and work are about attention, intention and awareness. Whether it is work or play, these three words circle around the very center of her actions. Jenna's greatest lessons in life have come not from school, but from knowing oneself, and taking the time to quiet the mind and listen to what truly IS.

Jenna is eternally thankful to everyone who has helped her along the way, from her first yoga teacher, to her artist peers, to the local lifeguard, to the random person who just smiled and said hello. The largest of thanks are reservered for her parents and siblings, who are wonderfully supportive and continue to encourage her growth as an artist.

When not in the studio or teaching, Jenna can usually be found swimming, taking a yoga class or walking the dog.

Artists' Statement

My current work portrays a moment of tension between traditional subject and contemporary environment. Horses run, dogs sleep, and birds soar in the sky, all the while our environment is ever changing. The human presence within nature is felt in many ways. Windfarms may replace traditional landscapes, and ongoing human interference with our natural environment continues to challenge an animal’s role in nature. This animal kingdom observes, experiences, and participates in this new world. My work is painted with a concision and simplicity that emphasize the underlying tension of the narrative. It’s storybook style, but not quite storybook stories. In my world, you may be witness to the aftermath of an event, or to its precursor.
